Somersham
Primary School
Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Adders are having a fantastic time on their residential at Bawdsey Manor. The photographs speak for themselves!!
It was lovely to see the children wearing red for
Comic Relief today. We have raised £86 so far for this worthy charity. Well done Somersham!
What a successful book sale. We raised £427.40 which converts to £170 for us to spend on new books for the library.
On Friday we did an experiment using mirrors, boxes and a light source (torch). We started by cutting off the cardboard flaps and creating windows for the light to pass through. Next, we stuck the flaps inside our boxes to create four rooms. We used torches to shine the light through each room, but we had to position two mirrors for the light to reflect into each room. It lit up a 'character' in the last room.
We have received a certificate of gratitude for the money we raised at the beginning of December for the 999 Cenotaph. The children came to school wearing clothes in the colours of the emergency services in order to raise funds to build the UK's first Emergency Services Cenotaph to honour those who have served in our NHS and emergency services. The school's name has been included in a special book which is being produced which will be placed in the National Archives of the United Kingdom.
Today we kick started our 'Fire! Fire!' topic watching our houses burn whilst trying, unsuccessfully, to put them out. We spent time discussing why we thought all of the houses burnt so quickly and how we could have put the fire out. This term we will be historians learning all about the events of 'The Great Fire of London'. We can't wait to show you more of our learning as the weeks go by.
Next Friday, 18th March is Red Nose Day. We are asking that, for the donation of £1 for the charity, the children come to school dressed in their own clothes and preferably wearing something red!
A reminder that we have a Scholastic book sale after school on Thursday and Friday this week and Monday next week. World Book Day vouchers can be used at the sale for any books costing £2:99 or more. They cannot be used for any stationery items. We will accept cash or alternatively you will be able to use the QR code which will be available on the sale days or pay online by visiting travellingbooks.co.uk/parents.
What a wonderful morning with the whole school finally able to mix together in house teams and enjoy the carousel of different activities.
Nicole (Year 6) explains what was on offer - 'In Key stage One we had a scavenger hunt to find words to make a book title. The words were hidden around the playground. I really enjoyed this activity. Then we were given a task to merge 2 different book characters - I merged the Gingerbread Man and the Three Little Pigs. In Key Stage Two we watched a couple of minutes of The Cat in the Hat and we had to make up a rhyming poem like it. We also read picture books to the younger children and had a go at making a booklet.'
All of the costumes were amazing and congratulations go to the prize winners chosen by the School Council - Auden (the lion), Evelyn (Little Red Riding Hood), Alice (Hedwig the owl) and Isobel (Moaning Myrtle).
