Our Curriculum

At Somersham Primary School, we provide a broad, ambitious and exciting curriculum where children can experience the awe and wonder of our world and believe the only limit is their imagination. Our curriculum delivers the National Curriculum in an exciting and purposeful way, preparing our children for future success. Learning is delivered through relevant and inspiring themes and topics with cross-curricular links exploited to enable pupils to make connections in their learning and to make it interesting and meaningful.

Through our curriculum we aim for our pupils to be:

  • Happy and Healthy
  • Safe and Successful Learners (ACE Particles)
  • Aspirational; striving for academic, creative, sporting and personal achievement
  • Knowledgeable about our World - its commonalities and diversity

Our intent for each National Curriculum subject is carefully considered to ensure that we meet our curriculum aims. This is further enriched by our Curriculum Drivers which underpin every aspect of our curriculum. Through these it is our intent to:

Equip our children with the emotional resilience needed t0 cope with life’s challenges in order to develop a sense of well-being by:

  • Understanding the link between a healthy body and a healthy mind;
  • Learning how to manage emotions and express them successfully;
  • Developing an awareness of the needs of oneself and those of others.

Ensure that our children know about and experience our world by:

  • Looking at our immediate locality, the UK and the wider world;
  • Critically reflecting on information that is presented to them;
  • Playing their part in actively caring for our planet.

Provide our children with the opportunities to:

  • Recognise that everyone is unique and special and develop a respect for difference;
  • Understand the diversity and commonality within local, national and world communities;
  • Appreciate the breadth of human achievement.

The ‘curriculum drivers’ support pupils’ personal development and experiences well.

Our Curriculum Content and Assessment Documents (CADS) ensure clear progression in pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding in each subject as they move through our school. Learning is delivered through relevant and inspiring themes and topics with cross-curricular links exploited to enable pupils to make connections in their learning and to make it interesting and meaningful. We also include visits and visitors to further enrich our curriculum and make it memorable for our pupils.

Our curriculum is further enhanced through our ACE Particles, Christian values for life, collective worship, community links and our 'real life curriculum'.

We also benefit from being able to work together with our partner school, Bramford CEVC Primary, to add to our curriculum and learning experiences for our pupils.

Our Curriculum Intent Summary

Successful Learners

Our ACE ‘Particles,’ teach our pupils to be responsible, respectful and independent learners with a positive attitude. We aim to foster their aspirations and encourage them to persevere in their learning, even when at first they don’t succeed. We aspire to provide opportunities for our pupils to achieve both independently and together and to be caring and sharing. Together we are ACE!

Pupils love to learn in this happy school. The school’s values are well known to the pupils. Pupils demonstrate perseverance within their learning, and they are polite and respectful. The emphasis on ‘live, learn and laugh’ is evident throughout the school.
