Somersham
Primary School
Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
We’ve had some fantastic highlights!
Our federation football matches against Bramford brought out great team spirit and sportsmanship, with our pupils giving their best effort on the field.
The Foxes' and Otters' school trip to Framlingham Castle was another highlight, offering hands-on learning and historical exploration.
This term, we also collaborated with SUEZ for National Recycling Week, raising awareness about sustainability. Our students embraced the opportunity to learn more about recycling and environmental responsibility, which was inspiring to see.
We celebrated World Mental Health Day, explored the wonders of the cosmos during World Space Week, and participated in Restart a Heart Day, where the Adders class enjoyed a valuable workshop with St John’s Ambulance.
We look forward to seeing what we can achieve next half term!
This week we celebrated World Mental Health Day and had both an assembly and classroom activities linked to this week's National Space Week.
Links were also made to Black History Month through discussions around significant people involved in Space including the amazing Katherine Johnson - the extraordinary mathematician who calculated the flight path for NASA's first Apollo moon landing.
This week has also seen the first Federation football match between the Year 5 and 6 boys between Bramford and Somersham. It was a brilliant match with the boys representing the school well. We will be hosting a Year 5 and 6 football match before half term here at Somersham for the girls and hope that this will be just the start for doing more as a Federation.
Lastly, thank you for such a good turn out at our Harvest Festival. I hope that it was enjoyed by all. The children sang well and the readers and performers all made me and the team feel so proud. Well done all!
What a week it has been here at Somersham Primary School! The children have been brilliant and made me, as a new member of the team, feel incredibly welcome and lucky to be here.
Return to School Curriculum Week
I have also had the opportunity to interact with so many of the wonderful children, having taught the Otters, Hedgehogs and Adders classes. Across the week, the children have engaged with our ‘Return to School’ curriculum with such enthusiasm and teamwork.
Starting the year in this way has allowed us to focus on themes such as ‘growth mindset’, thinking about goals for the future and considering how our ACE particles are linked to the Olympic values including Respect, Friendship and Determination.
From next week, the children will get stuck into the curriculum, with staff discussing with children key enquiry questions. In Science, this may include questions such as:
"What is science?”
"What is a scientist?”
"What questions might a scientist ask?”
"How is science important in real life?”
"What values/skills does a scientist need?”
REAL Life Curriculum
This year, we hope to introduce the children to a wide array of careers and role models through our Real Life curriculum. This will include a number of events across the year including Maths Week, Science Week, World Wildlife Day and more.
I have been in touch with a number of businesses and organisations already this term to look to develop our Real Life curriculum and develop opportunities for children to see subjects they learn in real life, through meeting scientists and more. I would also love the opportunity to invite some of you in to talk to the children about your own careers. This will show the children how what we learn in school has a real connection to the world beyond education, hopefully inspiring them to find their own path to future success and fulfilment. If you would be interested in this, it would be great to hear from you!
Roald Dahl Day - 13th September, 2024
Next week, we will be celebrating Roald Dahl Day - 13th September - with children engaging in themed activities across the day - a great way to kick start our Real Life curriculum events calendar.
Have a wonderful weekend one and all!
Mr Becker
Head of School
Today we had the most amazing afternoon celebrating all that is ACE about our School. We began by having a picnic on the school field and then moved onto having a range of ACE activities linked to each of our ACE particles. Activties ranged from a buzz wire, building an obstacle course to save the ACE, games with an inflatable ball, building an aeroplance (following the instructions), ACE art work, board games and hook a duck! There was defintely lots of perserverance with Everyone Working together and demonstrating our ACE particles, particularly creativity and Live, Learn and Laugh. Both myself and Mrs Burgess had a fabulous afternoon celebrating our ACE time at the school. Thank you to Miss Crush for organising such a special event for us all.
Year 1 and 2 have been learning about plants in Science and are investigating what plants need to grow and be healthy. They have enjoyed dissecting beans, planting seeds and bulbs and experimenting to see how water, light, temperature and soil affects their growth.
As part of our 'Amazing Africa' topic we have been able to look at different fabrics and artefacts. We have recreated our own art work inspired by the Ndebele house painting and discovered the symmetry within it. The children have been learning about the Maasai and comparing life in the different countries of Africa to life at home.
Great fun has been had during our Whole School Sports Enrichment Days ran by Kicks and Tricks Ltd. The children have continued to show great sportsmanship, supporting each other fantastically.
In art, Adders class created some amazing 3D sculptures based on the post War artist- Alberto Giaconnetti. They looked such fun to make (especially as it involved a lot of mess) and the end results are ACE! Well done Adders.
A huge congratulations to our Gardening Club and Mrs Aveling for achieving a bronze award for their Olympic garden, judged at the Suffolk Show this year. It looked truly ACE on show and definitely conveyed the uniqueness and creativity of Somersham School.
