  • Pen Licence Winners - Autumn 2024

Fri 20 Dec 2024 Mr Becker

Congratulations to some of our Adders children, who are the first to achieve the new 'Pen Licence Award' here at Somersham this year.

They have shown great determination and excellent progress since the new pen licence was introduced, demonstrating excellent progress across the term.

To achieve this award, they have shown excellent handwriting and overall presentation in all subject areas, showing that having high expectations of themselves can have a significant impact on their learning.

  • End of Term

Fri 20 Dec 2024 Mr Becker

As we come to the end of the autumn term at Somersham Primary School, I want to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you for your continued support and engagement. Your encouragement and involvement play a vital role in making our school the nurturing and inspiring place it is.

It has been a privilege to work alongside our ACE children, who often impress us with their enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment to our school's values.

This term, we were thrilled to introduce our new "ACE of the Term" awards, which celebrate the winners’ outstanding achievements and progress. Among these is the Olympic and Paralympic Values Award, a new addition that aligns beautifully with our ACE values, promoting determination, respect, and excellence in all that we do. These awards highlight the exceptional qualities this term’s winners have displayed daily, and I am delighted to celebrate their success together.

Looking ahead to the new year, we have some exciting plans to look forward to. One of the highlights will be a visit from wildlife conservationists from the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF). They will be hosting interactive talks and workshops, inspiring our pupils with their important work in conservation. This visit ties into our involvement with the DSWF's annual international children's art competition, with the children creating their own artworks for the global competition this past week. This year, the theme is "Coexistence," a perfect complement to the work we've been exploring this term on sustainability, recycling, and addressing the critical issues around plastic pollution.

Thank you once again for being such a vital part of our school community. Your support is invaluable as we strive to provide the best possible opportunities for our children.

We wish you and your families a restful and joyous holiday season and we look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting term in the New Year.

  • Children in Need - FEDERATION EVENT

Fri 15 Nov 2024 Mr Becker

Our Children in Need event this year culminated in a Federation LIVE online quiz with Bramford CEVC Primary School. All classes had the opportunity to interact and compete against each other in our Pudsey quiz hosted by Bramford's Head of School, Mrs Squirrell, and myself across the two schools. Fun was had by all!

A BIG thank you to all the generous donations this year - the money raised will go towards helping so many young people in need!

  • Anti Bullying Week 2024

Tue 12 Nov 2024 Mr Becker

This year's theme was 'Choose Respect'.

Throughout the day, classes took part in a variety of activities, including a BBC run LIVE online lesson, demonstrating a number of ACE particles including 'Everyone Working Together', 'Sharing and Caring', 'Creativity' and of course 'Responsibility and Respect'.

    Well done to all!

  • Fire & Cold Water Safety Event - REAL Life Curriculum

Tue 05 Nov 2024 Mr Becker

At Somersham today, we welcomed the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service volunteer team to school. They delivered a series of ACE workshops with all the classes looking at fire safety around the home and with sparklers - especially at this time of year with regards to fireworks events around the country.

The Adders class had a water safety workshop later in the day, looking at the dangers of cold water and carrying out scientific investigations in class to see how quickly cold water can have an impact on our bodies.

Fun was also had by some of our classes trying on the fire safety equipment and clothing.

It proved to be another fun and ACE learning day for all!

  • Half Term Highlights

Fri 25 Oct 2024 Mr Becker

    We’ve had some fantastic highlights!
Our federation football matches against Bramford brought out great team spirit and sportsmanship, with our pupils giving their best effort on the field.
The Foxes' and Otters' school trip to Framlingham Castle was another highlight, offering hands-on learning and historical exploration.
This term, we also collaborated with SUEZ for National Recycling Week, raising awareness about sustainability. Our students embraced the opportunity to learn more about recycling and environmental responsibility, which was inspiring to see.
We celebrated World Mental Health Day, explored the wonders of the cosmos during World Space Week, and participated in Restart a Heart Day, where the Adders class enjoyed a valuable workshop with St John’s Ambulance.
We look forward to seeing what we can achieve next half term!

  • School Week

Fri 11 Oct 2024 Mr Becker

This week we celebrated World Mental Health Day and had both an assembly and classroom activities linked to this week's National Space Week.

Links were also made to Black History Month through discussions around significant people involved in Space including the amazing Katherine Johnson - the extraordinary mathematician who calculated the flight path for NASA's first Apollo moon landing.

This week has also seen the first Federation football match between the Year 5 and 6 boys between Bramford and Somersham. It was a brilliant match with the boys representing the school well. We will be hosting a Year 5 and 6 football match before half term here at Somersham for the girls and hope that this will be just the start for doing more as a Federation.

Lastly, thank you for such a good turn out at our Harvest Festival. I hope that it was enjoyed by all. The children sang well and the readers and performers all made me and the team feel so proud. Well done all!

  • Cool Milk Competition with Bramford CEVC Primary School - FEDERATION EVENT

Mon 23 Sep 2024 Mr Becker

Our Adders class along with the Year 5 and 6 classes at Bramford took part a national 'Cool Milk' Competition to design a new milk carton.

The competition gave our Adders pupils the chance to design their very own milk carton in honour of the
    World School Milk Day 2024.

It was a fantastic way for them to showcase their creativity, while also learning more about healthy eating and the value of milk in their diet. The best part? Having completed their designs, these were sent to Bramford where the children voted on their favourite designs.

The Bramford pupils' designs were shortlisted by the Adders children as well before both classes collaborated online via video call to discuss their shortlisted designs and choose just one winner from each school.

Congratulations to Harley for his winning design!

"I think it's important that we have World School Milk Day because milk is an important part of our diet. It provides us with calcium, which is vital for bone health."

  • Back to School

Fri 06 Sep 2024 Mr Becker

What a week it has been here at Somersham Primary School! The children have been brilliant and made me, as a new member of the team, feel incredibly welcome and lucky to be here.

    Return to School Curriculum Week

I have also had the opportunity to interact with so many of the wonderful children, having taught the Otters, Hedgehogs and Adders classes. Across the week, the children have engaged with our ‘Return to School’ curriculum with such enthusiasm and teamwork.

Starting the year in this way has allowed us to focus on themes such as ‘growth mindset’, thinking about goals for the future and considering how our ACE particles are linked to the Olympic values including Respect, Friendship and Determination.

From next week, the children will get stuck into the curriculum, with staff discussing with children key enquiry questions. In Science, this may include questions such as:

    "What is science?”

    "What is a scientist?”

"What questions might a scientist ask?”

"How is science important in real life?”

"What values/skills does a scientist need?”

    REAL Life Curriculum

This year, we hope to introduce the children to a wide array of careers and role models through our Real Life curriculum. This will include a number of events across the year including Maths Week, Science Week, World Wildlife Day and more.

I have been in touch with a number of businesses and organisations already this term to look to develop our Real Life curriculum and develop opportunities for children to see subjects they learn in real life, through meeting scientists and more. I would also love the opportunity to invite some of you in to talk to the children about your own careers. This will show the children how what we learn in school has a real connection to the world beyond education, hopefully inspiring them to find their own path to future success and fulfilment. If you would be interested in this, it would be great to hear from you!

    Roald Dahl Day - 13th September, 2024

Next week, we will be celebrating Roald Dahl Day - 13th September -  with children engaging in themed activities across the day - a great way to kick start our Real Life curriculum events calendar.

Have a wonderful weekend one and all!

  • An ACE Afternoon!

Thu 18 Jul 2024 Mrs Chinnery

Today we had the most amazing afternoon celebrating all that is ACE about our School. We began by having a picnic on the school field and then moved onto having a range of ACE activities linked to each of our ACE particles. Activties ranged from a buzz wire, building an obstacle course to save the ACE, games with an inflatable ball, building an aeroplance (following the instructions), ACE art work, board games and hook a duck! There was defintely lots of perserverance with Everyone Working together and demonstrating our ACE particles, particularly creativity and Live, Learn and Laugh. Both myself and Mrs Burgess had a fabulous afternoon celebrating our ACE time at the school. Thank you to Miss Crush for organising such a special event for us all.
